Can You Really Retire Early – Interviewed By MoneyPlan SOS

Steve Stewart

Recently, Steve Stewart from MoneyPlan SOS contacted Kraig from Young Cheap Living and me to see if we would do a podcast interview on the thought process behind retiring early, the different methods one can take on the path to financial independence and some of the challenges someone who’s aiming for early retirement might see along the way.

It was a really fun interview and there was some of the “nuts-and-bolts” discussed as far as what you have to do to reach financial independence, but a lot of the interview was also an open ended discussion on why someone would want this, and if they do how they need to get rid of excuses and change their life for the better.

I hope any of you readers out there interested in podcasts or listening to a couple of enthusiastic guys discuss how great life can be if you really want it to be find interest in the interview. Although Steve published it last week I’m just now getting a chance to pass it along to you guys. There’s just been so much content I’ve been writing and sharing lately that I can’t get it all in as fast as I’d like sometimes.

You can access the interview here:

Hope you guys enjoy it! Let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading.

  5. I loved the podcasts. He was a very gracious host and asked all the right questions, to which you guys had perfect answers. Let’s hope that inspires a new wave of FI seekers.

Btw, I loved your catch phrase: “the 9 to 5 till 65”, it had an awesome ring to it.

  6. I have followed you for more than a year but never commented. I must say that I’m very impressed with your journey so far, nice to see someone who is so dedicated! I’m living in Sweden and is doing pretty much the same thing as you, but I usually have more focus on high-quality companies than dividends. And the podcast seems great, listening right now!

  8. Spoonman,

Hey, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I agree with you – Steve had some great questions.

The “9 to 5 till 65” is definitely not for me. And I know it’s not for you, either. I hope we’re both able to continue clawing our way out of the rat race, one day at a time. 🙂

    Cheers!

  9. Hi Jason,
Thank you for an inspiring blog. Just started reading here recently.

Regarding dividend stocks, what is the reason that you haven’t invested in Prospect Capital? Do you think the stock is overvalued?

    Greetings from Switzerland.

  10. Bryan,

Thanks so much! I’ll do my best to keep spreading the message.

I agree with you. Expenses is the one major piece of the puzzle that is mostly within our control. That’s why I’ve been harping on it so much for the past couple of years. Income and investment gains lie somewhat within our circle of control, but not like expenses. I believe it’s easier to cut expenses by 25% rather than go out and just make 25% more money. Once you have your expenses under control, then you can go out and try to improve other areas of your finances.

    Best wishes!

  11. Anonymous,

Thanks for stopping by from Switzerland! Glad you enjoy what you have read here so far. 🙂

I don’t invest in BDCs as of yet. To me the risk is just too high, and some of it really unknown. I don’t know that there’s any real way you can know exactly what kind of companies these BDCs are investing in. High risk typically equates with high reward in best case scenarios, but I don’t really need to amplify my risk to get to where I’m going.

    Best regards!

  12. Way to go Jason! Keep spreading the word. The thing interviewers never seem to zero in on is that your message gives people hope. Retirement isn’t hopeless for most people. The one thing we all have SOME control over is our expenses…..so cutting them is a great place to start. Keep it up

  13. Hi Jason,
Thanks for your reply. Fair point! I might give it a chance though 🙂

    Best regards!

  14. Wow Jason, thanks for sharing the interview with your readers. It was a great discussion and I know my listeners loved it.

I would love to have you on again to go more in depth with your investing strategies. We’ll keep in touch, OK?

BTW: Congratulations on your podcast being highlighted in the “New and Noteworthy” section of iTunes. It’s a great show!

  15. Steve,

Hey, I appreciate you stopping by! I hope all is well.

Thanks so much for giving Kraig and me the opportunity. I think it was a great interview and hopefully it inspired an audience out there!

Kraig recently told me the podcast was highlighted. That’s really amazing. I’m just blessed to be in the position to motivate people.

    Keep up the great work!

    Best wishes.

  16. I listened to this podcast this weekend as well as the three Chase Financial Freedom podcasts. I really enjoyed them very much and look forward to the next one!

About halfway through the second podcast, I realized that your voice sounds so familiar. I think you sound exactly like Vince Vaughn!

  17. Anonymous,

So glad you enjoyed the CFF podcasts as well as the interview on SOS! I’m just aiming to bring value to you readers (and now listeners). 🙂

I’ve never heard that before – that I sound like Vince Vaughn. I only wish I had half of his comedic talent! I’d have a lot more in the Freedom Fund if that were true!

    Thanks again for the support.

    Cheers!
